Crossfit Smash founder and head coach Bernie
Dowling has brought a fast and efficient
exercise program to Canberra, perfect for
those looking to become fitter, stronger, faster and,
most importantly, motivated to keep in shape.
"Crossfit is a system of group workouts that are
high intensity, constantly varied, with a big focus on
technique and range of motion," Dowling says.
Coming from a personal training, coaching and
fitness competing background, Dowling says once he
tried crossfit he never looked back.
"I've been doing crossfit for about five years and
it has increased my cardiovascular level of fitness
incredibly," he says.
"The workouts are definitely tough, but they
are moderated to suit the needs of each person
in the class."
Dowling describes the environment as supportive,
not only from coaches but from the rest of the group,
and everyone is proud of the achievements they
"The best thing is my class loves it and for a lot of
people loving exercise is the tough bit, once you love
it you're hooked."

Originally coming from Japan, jiu jitsu
has been adapted with a more Brazilian
vibe, focusing on mixed martial
arts, strength, self-defense, resistance and
technique rather than fighting.
The Brazilian jiu jitsu classes offered at
Elements Fitness combine the sport with a
fun atmosphere and culture.
"It's a fantastic way to get fit, it provides a
really strong core workout throughout the
class, it keeps you moving and its good for
your flexibility," Elements Fitness owner

"People get time out of their minds and work
schedules, centre into their bodies and reset
their mental clock."
The highly technical martial art is designed
to allow a smaller person to efficiently beat
a larger opponent through the proper use of
body positioning, balance and leverage.
"I get a lot of people underestimating their
capabilities, so it's great just seeing the
transformation in their confidence," he says.
"It not about size, it's about knowing how to
work the body to your advantage.

Situated just a stone's throw away
from the hustle and bustle of the city's
political turmoil is a boot camp that is
-- can you believe it -- relaxing.
When you think of boot camp you imagine
sweat, mud and tears, but for Chris Males,
founder of Pro-Fit Bootcamp, teaching boot
camp in the heart of the city's Glebe Park
provides a tranquil experience, with the
same fitness result.
"It's extremely close to the city with sessions
running in the morning, lunch times and
afternoons, so it's very convenient and
works quite well for people who need to
come and go straight off to work," he says.
With eight sessions over four weeks, the
boot camps offer flexible sessions able to be
adapted to suit personal needs and goals.
"Every single person regardless of their
age, ability or experience can get involved,"
"I love helping people reach their goals.
It's a really big plus for me seeing someone
set a goal to run five kilometres or do the
City2Surf and then achieve it, it makes
getting up early all worth it."
