Canberra Raiders' legendary premiership
captain, Mal Meninga, was on hand to
celebrate the launch of Abode Tuggeranong.
"We want to welcome Abode into the
Canberra Raiders family and we hope it's a
long and successful partnership," he said.
Just as it has been a stellar year for the
Canberra Raiders, GEOCON has tallied a
series of impressive achievements, with
construction on a third Abode Hotel in
Woden set to commence in December.
GEOCON has partnered with another local
institution for this development, enlisting
the world-class architectural services
of AMC Projects, which also designed
GEOCON's upcoming Gateway Business
Park in Gungahlin.
"AMC is just a fantastic organisation,"
GEOCON managing director Nick Georgalis
said. "They carry a lot of clout, they have a
lot of integrity, they really take on board what
we want, and they're very sensitive to those
affordability and sustainability issues that
we're trying to push."
Set to open in July 2013, Abode Woden
is an adaptive re-use of Juliana House, a
30-year-old commercial building that will
undergo extensive refurbishment to become
a stunning 153-room hotel.
"The good thing about the building is
that it's got a fantastic floor plate to convert
to a hotel," AMC Projects director Alastair
MacCallum said. "It has a nice outlook over
towards Red Hill, it's in a good position with
the public car park nearby...the ground floor
is nicely connected to the public verge and
lends itself to a café or wine bar to give that
really nice street appeal."
At the same time, Nick said the project
-- set to be the largest Abode in the family
-- will retain as much of building's distinct
character as possible.
"It's quite a significant project," Nick
said. "Because it's an existing building,
there's a lot of heritage around it.
"We're retaining a giant magnolia that's in
the corner, we think that tree is an important
feature of the way the building looks and
feels, and the name is being retained -- it's
going to be Abode at Juliana."
Abode Woden also maintains the strong
GEOCON ethos of sustainability, and will
employ clever initiatives for window glazing
"The mere fact that we're turning an old
building that's really unutilised into a new,
active use is an excellent start," Alastair said.
"Over and above that, because it's a high rise
building we're going to be harvesting water
on the roof and using that right down through
the building...[and] relying on existing assets
such as the nearby car park."
Alastair believes the project will do
wonders for the Woden town centre -- and
Canberra on the whole.
"I think it's an exciting project. It's going
to look a lot better, it's going to present well
and give that part of Woden character."
At your Service
The launch event for Abode Tuggeranong in September celebrated another landmark GEOCON achievement, with the
developer also announcing a newly-formed partnership with the Canberra Raiders -- another in a series of GEOCON's
synergetic partnerships that are helping make Canberra bigger and better.
Abode -- The Apartment Hotel is all about delivering first-class accommodation at
incredible value, but guests can also expect a range of nearby options to enhance the
experience of their stay.
As well as convenience being the key, Abode -- The Apartment Hotel is all about delivering first-class
accommodation at incredible value. Each room at Abode contains a kitchenette, dishwasher, laundry and
ironing facilities and a satellite television, making it a comfortable home away from home. Abode's holistic
philosophy is all about the full spectrum of service, which includes making sure its guests -- and the wider public --
have some impressive dining options at their disposal. Abode Gungahlin has numerous cafes and restaurants close
by, with Siren Bar and Restaurant right on its doorstep, which features modern Australian cuisine and a diverse
drinks menu, an open fireplace, wine tower and a large north-facing outdoor deck. The Abode Hotel and Siren
Bar and Restaurant synergy has been such a success that a second partnership with the guys from Siren is due to
open soon in Abode Tuggeranong. A new name, feel and offering will complete the picture for Abode. A number
of multicultural restaurants will also begin cooking up a storm in time for Christmas at Abode Tuggeranong's new
retail strip. Woden, meanwhile, is set to receive a cosmopolitan makeover when Abode at Juliana opens mid-next
year, with exciting potential for cafes and restaurants.
