131 CITY WALK, CANBERRA CITY
The Canberra Times | In The City Magazine
Canberra CBD Limited's 2012 Skate in
the City event proved very successful
again during July with a bigger rink
and even more lighting. The open
air ice rink continues to capture
the hearts of both Canberrans and
visitors to our beautiful growing city.
Spring is upon us and while farewelling the
ice rink, it means the planting of petunias for the
summer hanging baskets across Canberra City and
Braddon will commence very shortly.
Canberra CBD Ltd is eagerly awaiting the release
of the ACT government's Braddon Master Plan. This
burgeoning part of the city boasts at least six new
developments as detailed recently in The Canberra
Times. In the background of the accompanying
photo is Mode 3 on Lonsdale Street, Braddon. These
developments will change the face of Braddon and
provide new opportunities for people to live in
the City. Canberra CBD Ltd is already financially
involved in a number of beautification activities
in Braddon so we look forward to continuing to
contribute to this growing area.
The Australian Forum and City to the Lake project
being undertaken by the Economic Development
Directorate of the ACT government has already
started firing up the imagination with just how
much is possible in our changing and growing city.
Canberra CBD Ltd is a member of the project
reference group, a group of approximately 13
different organisations plus consultants and
Specific elements of the project include
investigating the feasibility of a new rectangular
stadium in Canberra City, a much larger National
Convention Centre (The Australian Forum
component), a new swimming pool, greater urban
density through new residential dwellings, the
opening up of the lakefront to greater community
use and linking it better to the city.
Over the coming months, some options will be
developed for further consideration. It is anticipated
that private sector financing will play an important
role in bringing this west basin redevelopment to
life.Back to what's coming up in the city. Canberra
CBD Ltd is proud to be sponsoring an expanded
City to Floriade Free Shuttle service provided by the
Canberra Centre. The expanded service will operate
seven days a week between the Canberra Centre in
Petrie Street and Regatta Point, with a stop at The
Sydney Building. An open top double decker bus
will carry up to 80 passengers replacing the coach
which only had a capacity of 49 people.
The 16th Canberra International Film Festival
will run between October 31 and November 11,
2012. Canberra CBD Ltd was a major partner in
2011 and has been sponsoring the event since
2009. This event has achieved an overall growth
of 100 per cent in the last three years and the
2011 event attracted an audience of almost 16,000
people into the centre of the city. More information
is included in this edition of In the City.
