Situated amongst some of the city's historic landmarks, the city interchange
holds an eclectic mix of stories from bus drivers, commuters and long-time
As a commuter from an early age, David Anthony clearly remembers
Canberra's early days. After moving to Australia from England in 1959, David
remembers growing up on the shores of NewActon and describes his memories
of the city bus interchange as a very different place to what it is now.
"Back in the 1960s, the Civic bus stops were basically on Northbourne
Avenue, one going north and the other south. It was an exciting place for a
young boy as there was always something interesting going on," David said.
Some of David's earliest and fondest memories unfolded at the interchange.
"One time, I was so engrossed in a sports store window on Northbourne
(Avenue), that the driver of my bus came and tapped me on the shoulder and
asked me if I intended to walk home. Talk about personal service."
"When I walk through the interchange now, the diesel smells the same,
but the vibe is very different. [Though] anxiety seems to have replaced the
casualness, the drivers seem to be as friendly and helpful as ever."
With an increasing inner city population, the City Bus Interchange is growing
steadily alongside. The new McDonald's sits on corner of Mort Street and
East Row, adding a Sydney-like feel to the station. Initiatives to assist vision
impaired passengers are also underway, and bus hailing kits are currently
being trialled at the interchange.
By 2026, the ACT government aims to have nearly 80,000 Canberran
commuters catching public transport, walk or cycle to work. Talks of
implementing a light-rail into Canberra's public transport system have also
been and with the City Bus Interchange so integral, it is sure to flourish
The city's bus interchange is a place where all and sundry meet, and then just
as quickly, disappear upon the rest of their journeys.
