Commonwealth Park is in full bloom
once more and that can mean only
one thing -- Floriade is just around
Set to open to the public on September
17, this year Canberra Centre, Canberra
CBD Limited and Murrays Coaches, Buses
& Limousines have teamed up to ensure
Floriade attendees get a healthier serve of
what CBD has to offer.
To this end, Canberra CBD Limited has
sponsored the Floriade Shuttle as part of its
role in attracting people to the City Centre,
providing visitors to Canberra, city workers
and shoppers free transport from the city to
the front gates of Floriade.
Operating from Canberra Centre on Petrie
Plaza and from the Sydney Building on
Northbourne Avenue, the shuttle will depart
every 45 minutes from Thursday to Sunday,
9am to 5pm.
This service will allow tourists to discover
the treasure trove of retail options and
vibrant dining of Canberra city before
spending a day amid the excitement of the
Last year's Floriade attracted a record
467,000 attendees and raised $29 million
for the local Canberra economy. As a result,
this year's spectacular has a lot to live up
to according to Australian Capital Tourism
marketing director Ian Hill.
"Given [Floriade] is a mature event,
we've got to keep giving the consumer
reasons to come back, whether they be from
the local community or our target audiences
from interstate," he said.
Mr Hill said the overall theme for Floriade
had become increasingly important to the
event over the years.
"Themes that attract the imagination of
the sponsor are really important I think,"
This year's theme for Floriade is 'A Feast
for the Senses', which has been carefully
and meticulously developed by Australian
Capital Tourism and local landscape design
firm JEA and Associates.
JEA and Associates director John
Easthope said there were a lot of factors that
needed to be considered when preparing
the display beds.
"When we do select bulbs we try to select
early flowering and late flowering bulbs
so we've got more chance of having a full
colour palette throughout the whole month,"
"There are such diverse colours in there
this time; we've simplified it even more so
there's probably more of a colour impact."
Floriade opens at Commonwealth Park on
September 17 and will run until October
16, with the popular Nightfest running
from September 28 to October 2.
Floriade is on once again this September. Planning
has been frenetic to ensure this year's event is the best
edition yet. BY ALEX MCCONACHIE.
