In the City Summer
Monday November 29, 2010
city has to offer over the warmer months. During the festive and
holiday season our city centre will again be a focal point for fine
dining, shopping and entertainment.
Christmas festivities are sure to entertain the entire family with the official start
of the festive season at the Lighting of the Christmas Tree in Civic Square on
Friday, December 3.
The crowd will witness Canberra’s giant 21-metre-high Christmas tree being lit,
and will be entertained by popular children’s performer Justine Clarke, A Bunch
of Posers featuring Mrs Claus and her Angelic Chorus and a special visit by
New Year’s Eve is always a special occasion in Canberra, and the ACT Gov-
ernment has again ensured that everyone in the community can enjoy New
Years Eve celebrations in the city.
Civic Square will play host to a free family-friendly concert featuring The Whitlams, while Garema Place will come alive
with a dance party featuring all the hits from 2010. Two fireworks displays will ignite the sky at 9pm and midnight.
Groovin’ in the City’s live music and performance program will continue to entertain lunchtime crowds at different loca-
tions throughout the city centre. Thanks to the generous support of Canberra CBD Limited, the program has been
expanded and will run during lunchtime, Tuesday to Friday, until February 2011.
I would like to remind those who are celebrating in the city, particularly over Christmas and New Year, to do so respon-
sibly. If you do intend to drink, please don’t drive. ACTION’s Nightrider service will be operating on the weekends in
the lead up to Christmas and again on New Year’s Eve.
I wish you all a happy and safe ‘Summer in the City’.

A giant thanks to everyone who wrote in following the last edition of In the City magazine. We enjoyed the
positive feedback, constructive suggestions and hearing what you love about our beautiful city. We took
excerpts from our favourite letters which won tickets to Dendy Premium Lounge.
The photo on the cover of issue three is near our accidentally-discovered favourite coffee shop,
Teatro Fellini. They have great coffee, the staff is friendly and their food is inexpensive. We heartily
recommend it to our friends. The inside eating area is film themed, which makes it more fun.
After reading through your In The City magazine,
it has reinforced the fond feelings that I have
for this city. I came to Canberra in 1968 and I
have seen Canberra blossom and grow during
this time (and not only during Floriade). Your
feature articles demonstrate some of the real
plusses that Canberra has to offer, such as a
thriving arts/theatre scene, parks and gardens
(and a potentially great arboretum), great city
planning and varied and vibrant restaurant
choices. Added to that, Canberra has allowed
me to pursue my passions of cycling, choral
singing and bridge playing. It is a terrific place
to bring up a family too, with fine educational
establishments and access to sporting facilities.
Our children were born here, and have continued
to enjoy the high-employment, low-pollution
lifestyle available in Canberra.
I am quick to leap to the defence of this city
against detractors, and I say let’s be proud of
Canberra and we can all help to make it even
better in the future.
Dear Dione and Team,
Congratulations on an
outstanding In the City
today. It is a first class
production. But a chat
with people in the
neighbourhood who have
read it, shows people
still have a perception
that Civic is unsafe after
dark and that parking

I fully expected that the
published Letters to the Editor
(Issue 3 - Spring 10) would
be the usual gushy fawning
tripe.... and was pleasantly
surprised to see some
balance! In this issue I loved
the Urban Clique feature – it
was wonderful to see such
a variety of gorgeous young
things doing their own thing
somewhat ‘out of the mould’.
Maybe in future you could
show some oldies – we like
to dress up too, and who
wouldn’t do almost anything
for one of Angela Menz’s
amazing hats. On looking up
The Coffee Bitch’s column in
www.culturazi.com I found
a new site that I can use,
and am inspired to say that

the accompanying behind

made me treasure this ‘pièce

From season to season, so much goes into the creation of In
the City magazine – more than we could ever pack into the
publication. So we’ve created www.inthecitymag.blogspot.
com. In this subsidiary blog you’ll get a satisfying peek behind
the scenes of our photoshoots – everything from the mayhem
of make-up and hair to the painstaking composition of the final
shots and everything in between.
From time to time, our writers will provide the insights,
experiences and anecdotes stemming from the interview
process that didn’t make the editorial cut. We’ll fill you in as to
the progress of the up-coming issue and throw in some updates
on the people within the pages.
